The artist Kate Pelling has been researching different facets of direct address to camera throughout her entire career. The next step in this ever-evolving enquiry was to attempt a cameraless form of direct address to camera. 'do you have something to say?' (2026, 01:02 Mins., no sound) consists of analogue photo/chemi-gram images created in a dark room on light-sensitive paper. Tools normally used in the artist's direct address to camera process – wig hair, theatrical make-up, false eyelashes – were employed in making of the 145 individual experiments. While the premise of the film was originally to simply 'make it speak', eventually the tussle between the self and the audience with no camera to act as mediator became overbearing, and resulted in possibly the loudest silent film ever.
